about

Blue is the second single from Australian songwriter Anita Lester.

Following ‘Wrong Time’- a profound first offering that has quickly packed the small venues she is currently performing in, Blue is a change of pace.

It’s story literally speaks of the protagonist painting her heartache in shades of blue.

It’s irreverent of 90’s soft rock, yet maintains the poetic prose Anita Lester has come known for.

The song is co-written Benjamin Riley- a long time collaborator of Anita’s, who brings a beautiful rhythm and depth to the instrumentation.

The music video has been animated by Anita herself, who is also an award winning animator and illustrator with one of her films ’Noch Am Leben’ screening in over 20 festivals.

It’s a somewhat haunting visualisation of the song is more expressive than narrative-driven and each frame (all hand drawn) leaves a trail of it’s past behind.

The photo has been taken by legendary Melbourne photographer, Matt Ellery, who together with Anita curated a homage to Picasso’s ‘The old Guitarist’

lyrics

Here in my hand is a brush that you gave me.
Eager to move it leads me hastily.
Pining to paint all the pure pain away-
Like the rapture in blue for a brand new day.

Closed are my eyes as I remember you.
And on this blank page you’re built in all that blue.
Cold like the ocean- the colour calms my cries,
And though my words wain, the paint tells no lies.
And I have now stained the white flag I wave,
Forward I charge, taking back all that I gave.
Hoping that helpless you hear me happy for our life you left for her. Blue is my banner I wave passing your door.
